Which MMO is right for you?

There are a load of MMO titles out right now, and although five years ago it was pretty much World of Warcraft or a few other titles, there’s a range of genres and approaches to the MMO experience that will appeal to those who aren’t interested in the RPG genre and are put off MMOs due to the RPG-saturation of the market.

But what sort of MMO is right for you? Well, it’s worth considering genre, as MMO titles are a little more varied, these days, although many of them are still RPG titles. But within their mechanics, there’s a lot of variety to be found.

EVE is a great example – you can play this space-exploration title like a miner, like a businessperson, like a politician, or even like a pirate. There’s no limit, and if you’re a Party Poker - era gamer who loves the idea of thousands of credits dropping into your account, this economy-driven, highly political title will really engage you. It also hosts all players on a single server, a feature that means you can join anyone, and play with anyone.

World of Warcraft is an obvious mainstay of the genre, because it’s a high-quality title with a ton of content, that allows you to be as casual or as hardcore as you like. Player versus player content, a singleplayer experience (with a strong story compared to earlier versions of the game), and the ability to socialise and team up with other players makes it a game worth checking out.

More recent, and certainly more solo-player-friendly, is SWTOR, also known as Star Wars: The Old Republic. This Bioware-produced game is strong on story, and contains a wide variety of familiar elements to multiple generations, from lightsabers to the Sith.

These are just a few examples, and even Maple Story can offer a unique experience, so it’s worth downloading some trials and trying things out – just bear in mind their file size, as the average big-budget MMO could be up to and even over 10GB in file size.
